Best Shoes for Standing All Day in NZ and Australia (2026): Retail, Hospitality and Teachers

Short answer: for most people standing through long retail, hospitality or teaching shifts, a well-cushioned, supportive lace-up sneaker that fits your feet late in the day is the safest bet. Shoes like the HOKA Bondi 9, Brooks Adrenaline GTS and ASICS Gel-Kayano come up repeatedly in independent 2026 guides and are stocked in New Zealand. If you work in a commercial kitchen, slip-resistant footwear comes first, and your workplace rules beat any list.

Working in healthcare? We cover clinical shifts separately in Best Shoes for Nurses on 12-Hour Shifts (NZ & AU).

How we chose (and what we didn't do)

We have not wear-tested these shoes. This shortlist is built from independent 2026 buying guides (AOL Shopping and Fleet Feet), podiatrist-written guides from the US and Brisbane, and workplace-health guidance from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and WorkSafe New Zealand. We only included a shoe if we could find it covered by a source we read and could find it listed by an NZ or Australian retailer. Model numbers change often, so the version in your local store may be newer than the one reviewed. Sources are listed at the end, and information is current as of October 2026.

What the workplace-health guidance says

CCOHS notes that standing itself is a natural posture, but regular prolonged standing can lead to sore feet, swollen legs, muscular fatigue and low back pain. Its footwear advice is practical: shoes should let your foot keep its natural shape, grip the heel firmly, leave room for your toes, provide arch support, and lace up so your foot doesn't slide. On hard floors such as concrete, it suggests a cushioned, shock-absorbing insole. In its own words, "Your feet can only be as comfortable as the footwear permits."

For kitchens and food workplaces, WorkSafe New Zealand lists slippery wet surfaces and "wearing slippery footwear" among the causes of slips, trips and falls, and recommends non-slip footwear alongside good housekeeping and slip-resistant flooring.

The shoes

HOKA Bondi 9

The Bondi 9 is AOL Shopping's best overall pick for standing all day (updated April 2026), and Fleet Feet's September 2026 guide calls it "the gold standard for all-day comfort". Both highlight its soft, high-stack foam and rocker-style ride, and it comes in regular and wide fittings. NZ retailer Shoe Clinic lists it in women's and men's widths, including 2E.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS

AOL Shopping recommends the Adrenaline GTS 24 for people who want medium support, using Brooks' GuideRails system (firmer foam at the edges, softer underfoot) and widths from narrow to extra-wide. Shoe Clinic NZ currently lists the newer GTS 25, so expect the version in store to differ from the one reviewed.

ASICS Gel-Kayano 33

Fleet Feet's 2026 standing guide includes the Gel-Kayano 33 for people who want structured stability, citing its 4D Guidance System, FF BLAST PLUS foam and a flared, wider base. Shoe Clinic NZ stocks it in several widths. A good fit if your feet tend to roll in as you tire.

On Cloudrunner

AOL Shopping lists the On Cloudrunner 2 as a stability running shoe for long days on your feet, with Helion foam and a CloudTec outsole, in a regular width only. Shoe Clinic NZ now lists the Cloudrunner 3 and Cloudrunner 3 Max. Worth trying on if you find maximal shoes too bulky.

Vionic Uptown Loafer

Not every school or shop floor suits a running shoe. AOL Shopping picks the Uptown Loafer for office and travel wear, noting its removable contoured footbed, deep heel cup and medium and wide widths. Brisbane podiatrist Sophie McLellan, writing for Australian retailer The Comfort Co (July 2026), suggests it as a smarter closed shoe for teachers and front-of-house roles. Note that retailer's picks come from its own range.

Skechers Work slip-resistant shoes

If you work in a commercial kitchen or behind a bar with wet floors, start with slip-resistant footwear. Australian hospitality supplier Nisbets lists a Skechers Work slip-on with what it describes as a slip-resistant, oil-resistant outsole, memory foam insole and water- and stain-resistant upper. Check the exact standard your employer requires before buying, and confirm the specific model's rating with the retailer.

Oszea Urban Essentials (disclosure: we make Oszea)

We'll be straight about where our shoes fit. Oszea Urban Essentials and Tasman Essentials are waterproof lifestyle sneakers, not specialist work or medical footwear. They make sense if your day starts with a wet commute and your workplace allows a casual sneaker, such as many retail floors or classrooms. Our ZEA-TEX construction has four layers (a breathable knit outer, waterproof membrane, flexible elastomer layer and soft lining), and the shoes are lightweight. They're designed for rain, puddles and wet grass, not full submersion. We make no slip-resistance, arch-support or podiatric claims, so they are not the right pick for commercial kitchens, and if you need a supportive running-style shoe for structural reasons, choose one of the options above. Sizing runs true to size; size up if you have wider feet. See Urban Essentials or browse our Workdays on Your Feet collection. Curious how waterproof shoes handle sweaty shifts? How to choose shoes for standing all day

  • Cushioning: hard floors such as concrete or tiles reward a cushioned midsole or a shock-absorbing insole, as CCOHS suggests.
  • Support: CCOHS recommends arch support, a firm heel grip and lace-up fastening. If your feet roll in, a stability shoe (Adrenaline, Kayano) may suit better than a purely soft one.
  • Fit late in the day: feet swell over a long shift. The Comfort Co's podiatrist guide recommends fitting shoes in the afternoon and checking toe room and width. A removable footbed lets you add your own insole or orthotic later.
  • Rotate pairs: having two pairs lets each one dry out fully between shifts, which matters after wet commutes. Our guide on how to dry wet shoes covers the safe way to do it.
  • Workplace rules: kitchens may require slip-resistant footwear, and some schools or shops have dress codes. Check first.

If you have heel or arch pain that lasts more than a few weeks, or conditions such as diabetes or circulation issues, see a podiatrist rather than relying on a shoe list.

FAQ

What type of shoe is best for standing all day?

Most of the guidance we read points to a lace-up shoe with good cushioning, arch support, a firm heel and enough toe room. For most people that means a cushioned or stability sneaker, unless your workplace needs something specific.

Do I need slip-resistant shoes for hospitality work?

In kitchens and other wet or greasy areas, very likely. WorkSafe New Zealand recommends non-slip footwear as one control for slips. Ask your employer which standard applies.

Are Oszea shoes suitable for standing all day?

They're a lightweight waterproof sneaker for wet commutes and casual workplaces like retail or teaching, where a dry sneaker is allowed. We don't make slip-resistance, arch-support or podiatric claims, so they aren't suited to commercial kitchens or to anyone who needs a specialist supportive shoe.

When should I buy shoes for long shifts?

Try them on later in the day when your feet are at their largest, and walk around before you buy, as both CCOHS and The Comfort Co's podiatrist recommend.
